What is a person-centred NDIS plan & why is it important?

What is a person-centred NDIS plan and why is it important?

Whether you are living with disabilities, caring for someone with disabilities or you are a NDIS plan co-ordinator, it can be difficult to look beyond the current day-to-day challenges to start dreaming about the possibilities. Yet this is exactly what a person-centred NDIS plan is all about.

When it comes to NDIS funding and developing support plans, there needs to be a delicate balance between the:

  • Client needs of living a happy, safe and fulfilling life
  • Constraints of NDIS funding budgets
  • And the immediate and most essential client support requirements

However, taking a person-centred approach to NDIS planning and care helps to balance these often conflicting priorities.

What is person-centred NDIS planning?

Wherever possible, person-centred NDIS plans involve the individual living with disability. At its very core, this includes focusing on each person’s:

  • Abilities and strengths
  • Motivations and ambitions
  • What engages and excites them
  • Day-to-day needs and supports
  • Goal setting, aspirations and achievable milestones along the way
  • Prioritising requirements and support services
  • Benchmarking and regular reviews to adjust or reset their NDIS plan as their needs evolve
  • Support networks that extend beyond NDIS funding to include the broader community, family and friends

Why are person-centred NDIS plans so important?

The best outcomes in life occur when people work together to achieve an agreed goal. It should be the same when developing an individual’s NDIS plan.

Whenever we can involve individuals in developing their own NDIS plan and the ability to prioritise the supports that are most important to them, we are making a quantum shift. We are giving them control of their lives and empowering them to fulfil their potential – whatever that looks like for them.

People-centred NDIS plans won’t necessarily ask people living with disability to make all the decisions about their care. But it does mean we can all work together to increase each individual’s independence, quality of life and skills development.
