SOCIAL & COMMUNITY
One of the key factors in helping people achieve independence and a feeling of fulfillment is social and community interaction as well as regular involvement and participation.
WHAT ARE SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Social, recreational and community activities are part of our everyday life. These are the activities we do to unwind or to have fun. They help us to enjoy better health and a feeling of wellbeing.
Social and community activities can also help you meet new people, make new friends, and improve a whole range of skills.
Social, recreational and community activities can be funded under the NDIS to give you the assistance you need to enable you to take part in a variety of activities.
What are some social, recreation and community activities that can be SUPPORTED by Healthcare Request?
There are a large number of activities our supports can assist you with including:
- Visiting family and friends
- Activity hobbies you enjoy and help you keep fit such as cycling, kayaking, swimming, skating
- Participating in sports such as tennis, netball, basketball, baseball, volleyball
- Going out socially to the movies or a concert
- Going out to places for fun such as bowling, shopping, or visiting an exhibition
- Learning something relaxing such as yoga or meditation techniques
- Learning a new skill like dance, art classes, playing a musical instrument, sewing, pottery, fishing, or baking
WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED WITH SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY SUPPORTS?
Healthcare Request will be able to assist you in determining whether your NDIS plan includes supports for you to take part in different activities.
However, you will need to pay for the costs of the activity that everyone would pay to participate such as membership fees, entrance costs or equipment hire. For example – you may want to attend an art class. Your supports that assist you to attend the class and even participate during the class may be funded under your NDIS plan, but you would still need to pay for the cost to attend the class and any incidental costs such as materials.
